Describe the impact of your location on your business
Publishing activity tends to be concentrated in big cities such as London and Edinburgh, so some people might see our location as unusual. For us, however, it’s just right – we are a Scottish company, and all of our books are linked to Scotland in some way – whether that’s through the author, the setting of the story, or its characters. These days, with the internet, it really is possible to work from anywhere. And now that Zoom is a feature of daily life, we can join meetings, events, training courses – and even host online book launches – from right here on the edge of the Atlantic! We love living on Lewis – the peace, the space for creativity, and the scenery; we couldn’t imagine working anywhere else.
What would you list as your biggest achievement(s)?
To date, our biggest achievement was being shortlisted for the Saltire Society Emerging Publisher 2019. As a small start-up that’s new to publishing, this industry recognition is hugely motivating – making us feel like the hard work and effort is worth it.
But in some ways, just publishing our books is the greatest achievement. We are getting braw books and inspiring stories into the hands of children and young adults that perhaps wouldn’t exist at all without us. We have the privilege of working with hugely talented authors in Scotland – many of whom have been published for the first time with us. This is work that feels important and valuable to Scotland – and to readers and writers everywhere – that’s our ongoing achievement and our daily inspiration.
