Describe the impact of your location on your business
Moving up to the Highlands of Scotland has been one of the best moves we have ever made. Not only has it allowed us to develop and grow our business, make some fantastic contacts and take up exciting opportunities, the view out of the window is spectacular.
Although we are based in Scotland we see ourselves very much as an international publisher working with authors and illustrators from Scotland, across the UK and abroad.
Many of our picture book titles have now been translated into various languages, including Russian, Chinese, Korean, Taiwanese, Arabic, Slovenian and Gaelic.
There is a real sense of excitement, camaraderie and support from the publishing and book industry up where the sky meets the sea and for us there could be no better place to be.
What would you list as your biggest achievement(s)?
2019 was a very big year for us, starting with one of our titles, One Button Benny, winning the Bookbug Picture Book Prize. Later on in 2019 Alan was absolutely thrilled to win the Saltire Society Emerging Publisher of the Year ( a joint win with Kay Farrell from Sandstone Press).
Earlier this year (2020) LDB was shortlisted for the Small Press of the year award in the Scottish region of the British Book Awards.
Being recognised for our achievements thus far is very special and has opened so many more doors for us as a small indie publisher.
A key element of our long-term strategy for LDB is to raise the public and industry awareness of the wonderfully talented unsung illustrators out there. We continue to partner new illustrators with known authors, and because we are always meeting so many fabulously talented creatives, we decided to take things a step further.
We are extremely proud that in early 2019 we set up a brand new imprint, Little Door Debuts, where LDB actively champions and publishes debut picture books, which are written and illustrated by exciting, new, creative, illustrating talent.
We are very pleased that with the help of some Creative Scotland funding, we have been able to publish two new Little Door Debuts in 2020.
We continue to be amazed and humbled by the talent of all of our authors and illustrators, and we hope that we can help them to achieve the success that they truly deserve.
