Sally Magnusson - on writing historical fiction and non-fiction

Join writer and BBC journalist Sally Magnusson in conversation with her agent Jenny Brown as they discuss the author/agent relationship, the transition from journalism to writing books, the differences between writing fiction and non-fiction, and the challenges and rewards of writing historical fiction. Sally’s non-fiction includes the award-winning Where Memories Go about her mother’s dementia. Her latest book is The Ninth Child, a novel set in the Highlands in the 1850s. Jenny Brown is founder of the Edinburgh-based literary agency Jenny Brown Associates.

    Jenny Brown established the Edinburgh-based literary agency Jenny Brown Associates in 2002. The agency is known for representing Scottish-based writers of literary and crime fiction, narrative nonfiction, and writing for children. She was previously founder director of the Edinburgh International Book Festival, (of which she is now Vice Chair) and Head of Literature at the Scottish Arts Council. She is Chair of the crime writing festival Bloody Scotland.

    Sally Magnusson is a Scottish author and broadcaster. After focussing on journalism and non-fiction, including the Sunday Times bestseller Where Memories Go, she moved into fiction with the publication in 2018 of her debut novel, The Sealwoman’s Gift. Her second novel, The Ninth Child, was published by Two Roads in March 2020. The Sealwoman’s Gift was shortlisted for the Authors’ Club Best First Novel Award 2019, the Paul Torday Memorial Prize, the McKitterick Prize, the Waverton Good Read Award, the HWA Debut Fiction Crown and the Saltire Fiction Book of the Year.
