Are you looking for a career in Animation?

Highlands and Islands Enterprise, MG ALBA and XpoNorth are working with BAFTA award winning animation company, King Rollo Films to bring two separate training courses each of two weeks’ duration to budding animators, artists, illustrators and graphic designers.

We are offering this training free at the point of delivery to participants, with additional assistance being offered in travel and accommodation for those not living within commute distance of Sahbal Mor Ostaig, where the training will take place. 

King Rollo are currently working on several commissions for broadcast and would like to have an original animation series produced in Skye.  This training is designed to equip participants with the skills, knowledge and tools to take the first steps into a professional career in animation and in doing so found a new animation workforce in the Highlands.

Course 1: Designing Backgrounds for Animation
7th December - 18th December 2015

Course Description
In this practical, hands-on course, participants will explore the fundamentals of designing, drawing and painting 2-D backgrounds for animation. Participants will gain an understanding of how artists’ and writers’ work are brought to life through scripts and storyboards; then, using both traditional and digital techniques, create environments which support the characters and the story.

Course Leader
The course leader is industry professional and King Rollo Films Art Director, Paul Dowling. 

Course 2: CelAction 2D Animation
11th January - 22nd January 2016

Course Description
In this practical, hands-on course, participants will explore the fundamentals of building and animating in CelAction 2D. The course is designed to give the participant an overview of the CelAction 2D animation software. You will be taken through the main features of CelAction with specific focus on analysing a character for construction, building a character for use in a 2D series and the tools and functions needed for animation.

Course Leader
The course leader is industry professional and King Rollo Films CelAction Course Leader and Generalist, Mat Dame.  

Participant Specification
If you wish to attend the course, you will:

  • Have an active interest in illustration and animation;
  • Possess good drawing skills and have a keen eye for layout and composition;
  • Be willing to work in a variety of art styles;
  • Be motivated, organised and detail conscious;
  • Work effectively on your own and collaborate & combine talents with a team.
  • For Designing Backgrounds for Animation Previous experience of digital drawing and using Photoshop will be an advantage.
  • CelAction 2D Animation Previous experience of animation is essential.

Both course leaders will share their extensive knowledge and expertise, and provide a stimulating environment to guide, support and encourage participants in their own learning.

Course Times
9.30am - 5pm each day except the first day which starts at 10am

Accommodation
Can be provided if necessary from the Sunday prior to the last Thursday inclusive.

Designing Backgrounds for Animation:
Sunday 6th Dec to Thursday 17th Dec inclusive ie you depart on Friday 18th Dec

CelAction 2D Animation:
Sunday 10th Jan to Thursday 21st Jan inclusive ie you depart on Friday 22nd Jan

Travel
Depending on your location, assistance with costs for travel will be considered.  This may consist of a contribution and not the full amount.   
Each application will be assessed on its own merits.

Applicants should be based within the Highlands and Islands Enterprise catchment area which covers Western Isles, Orkney, Shetland, Moray, Highland and Argyll
