Regional Business Profile: permeate studios

Can you introduce the business and describe the services that permeate studios offer?

We are a boutique creative studio that specialises in kinetic design. We help our clients build lasting, meaningful relationships with their audience and customers by communicating their story through animation and motion graphics.

What kind of businesses or individuals do you deliver services for and what value can you offer to a project?

From start-ups to larger organisations, our focus is to work with doers, pioneers and change-makers who like to innovate in some way. As visual thinkers and designers, our expertise lies in understanding the bigger picture of what people do, extracting the compelling story and then communicating it in a way that is powerful and easy to understand. We have developed a number of ‘visual storytelling tools’ specifically designed to help with this and are constantly in the process of developing others. Just as we enjoy working with innovators, we feel it’s also key to innovate our own creative thinking!

Why do you find the Highlands and Islands such a strong destination to base your business in?

There’s a feeling of togetherness and co-operation in the Highlands and Islands and with an increasing amount of entrepreneurs doing interesting and innovative things, it feels like an exciting place to be. At permeate studios, we’re big believers in collaborative creativity. Being geographically spread out brings a rich mix of skills, all of which feed into one another and adds to the diverse, creative ecology of the studio. The natural world is also a big inspiration in our work, so it’s fantastic to head off into the Cairngorms or take a walk down a stunning beach to get some headspace! With video conferencing and electronic file transfer via high speed internet, we can work with clients without travelling physically, but if we do, we can easily connect to the various transport hubs in the area.

What’s your personal background?

My creative journey so far has spanned over 15 years. Growing up in Yorkshire and then studying in Manchester, I first cut my teeth designing for the music and fashion industries in London for the likes of Pet Shop Boys, Paul Weller and Vivienne Westwood. In 2010 I moved to Glasgow and then co-founded creative studio Playdead in 2011, creating a vast array of motion design for clients such as BBC, National Geographic and Discovery Channel; winning several RTS Scotland awards and being nominated for 2 Scottish BAFTA awards along the way. After taking some time out travelling in 2017, I relocated to Forres, Moray in Summer 2018, with the vision of establishing a new motion design studioin the Highlands.

What project have you been most proud of?

Creating the opening title sequence for the award winning drama series ‘Shetland’. I’ve always been a massive fan of the crime drama genre, so it was a total pleasure and dream job to work on, especially as it’s set in Scotland. The visual challenge of creating a 30 second piece of motion design to encapsulate a whole drama series is a fascinating one and the end result is a delicate balance of typography, animated textures and shot footage.

How do you work with clients to ensure they receive a dynamic and valuable service?

We make no secret of the fact that we’re a small creative studio. In fact, in the fabric of today's creative world we see it as a big strength. Our ethos is to work with a small number of clients who share similar values, so from the word go there’s a trust and shared vision in what we do and how we go about it. The studio’s agile and collaborative nature means that depending on the needs of a specific project, through our wider creative network we can bring together all the right ingredients to achieve the best results; creatively directing and carefully managing the process along the way. In a world that’s increasingly complex and full of noise, our unique visuals help innovators stand out from the crowd, connecting more deeply with people and hopefully in turn helping to inspire a more positive, brighter future for everyone.
