XpoNorth and the Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) Creative Industries Team will offer an overview of the new sector support services available to creative businesses across the Highlands and Islands as well as the recently launched XpoNorth Digital Programme. There will also be a spotlight on the seminar element of XpoNorth, a discussion on the benefits of attending and showcasing at this important platform, and a preview of some of the key themes and speakers confirmed to participate in this year’s festival.

6.30pm – 7pm: The Legal Aspect: Protecting your Creativity
As every business regardless of size or scale owns or uses some form of IP, protection of some of your most valuable assets is essential in the creative industries. Although this area can often seem daunting, this session will cut through the myriad of key issues relevant to creatives and offer an understandable overview on protecting everything that makes your business unique. This is a must attend session for all creative businesses in the current landscape. This session will be delivered by Jonathan Tait (Solicitor, BTO Solicitors LLP). Jonathan has years of experience working alongside companies such as MTV, BBC, Scot FM, WF Management, Total-Rock and lecturing at Jewel & Esk Valley College. After retraining as a Solicitor with a specialist knowledge of intellectual property protection and exploitation, data protection and media & entertainment law, Jonathan offers clients the rare advantage of combining legal knowledge with hands-on experience across the creative landscape.
7pm – 7.30pm: Spotlight on Page to Screen
This inspiring and interactive session will see Jessica Fox (Sector Specialist, XpoNorth and Director and Writer) sit down with Uist based Film-maker and Producer Beatrix Wood (TrixPix Media) to discuss how to tell the story in multiple formats, and why she finds the region such an inspiring destination for her dynamic business model. Jessica will also offer a fascinating insight into her time as NASA’s former resident storyteller and discuss her work as a celebrated writer, producer and director. Both will also offer top tips on how content moves between print and screen, developing your craft and driving your business or career forward.
7.30pm – 8pm: Crowdfunding Creativity with Tim Wright
Crowdfunding is an increasingly popular source of funding for many individuals and organisations and is a process which can deliver much more than money. In this session, leading crowdfunding consultant Tim Wright (Sector Specialist, XpoNorth and Owner, twintangibles) will draw on practical examples and theories around the crowd economy to demystify the process and offer participants a broader understanding of crowdfunding, discuss how to design and promote your campaign, avoid common pitfalls, look at which platforms best suit your project and overview the value and skills needed to succeed.
8pm – 8.30pm: Open Music Business Development Workshop
This interactive discussion will see XpoNorth’s Alex Smith sit down with regional Studio Owner and Producer Pete Fletcher (Black Bay Recording Studio), Musician and Studio Owner Keith Morrison (Wee Studio), Halina Rifai from multi-channel music services company Lost Art Agency and Dougal Perman (Sector Specialist, XpoNorth and Director, SMIA) to discuss artist and business development for those working or looking to work in the music industry. This open discussion panel will also offer attendees an opportunity to look at how XpoNorth and SMIA can best further develop and add value to the region’s already highly vibrant music economy.
