XpoNorth Podcast #008: Giles Perring, Sound of Jura/XA Music

If you are on an island, supposedly remote from anywhere, how easy is it to collaborate and create? What if you wanted to work with musicians spread all over the place, be part of a concert taking place hundreds of miles away being watched by thousands of people internationally; all without leaving your home? Giles Perring did that last year, with a bit of help from Dougal Perman.

Giles Perring is a musician, composer and producer who runs the Sound of Jura studio based on the Isle of Jura off the coast of Argyll. Giles is a musical maverick who has made music since the 80s and involved creative collaboration in his work through remote participation technology, often just using the humble telephone.

Giles’s ever-evolving piece The Exchange was the feature of an XpoNorth Spotlight in April 2020. That performance was the highlight of the launch event for the Cultural, Heritage and Arts Assembly of Argyll and the Isles, or CHARTS, which took place in St John’s Cathedral in Oban with a live link from Giles’s studio in Jura and contributions from musicians from all over the world.

Dougal collaborated with Giles to make that project possible and speaks to him in this episode of the XpoNorth Podcast about how he got into making music, how collaboration and remote participation feature in his work and his perspective on remote working during the coronavirus crisis.

These podcasts have been curated by XpoNorth to inspire you and highlight different ways that you can potentially create, generate new ideas, products, services and income during what is a very difficult period for most businesses and organisations.
