Qualitative Researcher | The Royal Society of Edinburgh

The Royal Society of Edinburgh is looking for a Qualitative Researcher who has excellent research and writing skills, as well as a background and interest in Scottish relations across Africa. This would be suited to a 1st or 2nd year PhD Student, but we welcome applications from anyone who feels they meet the criteria below.

  • Either full-time (35 hours/week) fixed term of up to eight weeks, or part-time over several months, to be agreed with applicant upon appointment
  • Flexible working
  • Hourly rate of £16.78

This placement will be central in contributing to the RSE’s Africa Working Group by building on an existing report of all major activities and relations of Scottish Universities in Africa. This project aims to provide a detailed overview of all current and recent major collaborations and existing partnerships involving the Scottish Higher Education sector and African institutions to help deliver the RSE’s strategic plan, values, and mission of “knowledge made useful”.

As Scotland’s National Academy with over 1,800 Fellows from academia, business, and public service who are among the most distinguished in their fields, we engage and connect nationally and internationally to share knowledge and tackle the most pressing challenges of the modern world. This placement would be working closely with the involved fellows, members of the Africa Working Group, and the International Team at the RSE.

We are looking for a talented individual to:

  • Lead on this scoping project in a timely, productive, and efficient manner;
  • Work with the members of the Africa Working Group;
  • Work with RSE colleagues and external stakeholders;
  • Analyse survey results;
  • Interview key contacts across Scotland, remotely and/or in-person;
  • Survey Google/relevant websites/other resources as appropriate;
  • Produce a written report on scoping outcomes;
  • Present report at relevant meetings and workshops;
  • Collaborate with RSE staff to publicise the report
