Preserving it for historical reasons is very important as it is such a massive part of the modern world. However, the internet and the content accessed through it have a big problem - it is short-lived. A website available today might not be available tomorrow. One study found that just under 40% of citations on journal papers had disappeared within four years of publishing - which is astonishing.
