Radio goNORTH Archive 2013 Live Sessions Rab Noakes

Rab Noakes was the perfect guest for the Radio goNORTH trainee producers because of his years of experience in not only the music business, but also as a radio producer. He came to join Jim Gellatly looking after Maria and Paul’s show for a session after speaking on a panel at his fifth goNORTH festival.

He gave an inspiring talk about starting out in the music industry and how goNORTH has the right attitude towards the reality of the business.

Rab told Jim about how he had been playing music for sixty years, starting out when his father would ask him to play in front of the family at Christmas and he would jump at the chance. Rab had been joined by Gary Clark (songwriter) earlier in the day to impart their combined knowledge gained through their own life experience.

Rab told how goNORTH Director Amanda Millen had suggested he collaborate with Gaelic singer Kathleen MacInnes. This meeting of musical minds resulted in a variation of the traditional murder ballad “Twa Sisters” with which he ended the session.
