Patrick Grant, the designer well known as a judge on The Great British Sewing Bee, will be in conversation with Joan Johnston, Fashion, Craft and Textile Sector Specialist at XpoNorth. Patrick, born in Edinburgh, is passionate about supporting skills, textiles and clothing manufacturing across the UK, evident in his businesses including E.Tautz, Community Clothing and Cookson and Clegg. Patrick will share his passion for regional making, his relationship with the Highlands and Islands, the importance of regional skills development, the growth of making at home and his thoughts for the future on the textile fashion sector.

Joan Johnston has over 20 years’ experience working with global luxury brands in senior creative and commercial roles. From creative design and board director, to business owner and university programme leader, Joan’s wealth of knowledge and expertise encompasses concept development through the design process, to high end client-centred promotion online and service delivery. Most recently Joan has developed an innovative sustainable bedding range using the by-product of the cashmere industry, launched under premium brand Ava Innes.
Joan is the Fashion, Craft and Textile Specialist for XpoNorth.

He lives in south London and bicycles to work each day.
Patrick is a regular on television and radio as a commentator on the British fashion, clothing and textile industries. He has been a contributor to several major television documentaries including Savile Row, Harris Tweed, and The Perfect Suit, but is best known for his role in the popular BBC Series The Great British Sewing Bee, for which he was nominated for the 2017 National Television Awards. He has written on diverse subjects for many titles including GQ, The Financial Times and The Times. His book ‘Original Man’ was published by Gestalten in 2014. He is a regular lecturer at schools and colleges across the UK.
