Minority Languages and the Creative Industries

With around 7,000 languages spoken in the world today, minority languages are in fact in the majority. Rather than being seen as being on the periphery, these languages offer the potential for unique content and present consumers with a different view point. This diverse and exciting panel will discuss the opportunities that technology and broader changes in the consumption of media offer to bring exciting, authentic new content to global audiences, putting them directly in the centre of everything.


    Domhnall Caimbeul
    Chief Executive, MG Alba - runs BBC Alba, Gaelic TV channel in partnership with BBC

    Domhnall Caimbeul joined MG ALBA as Chief Executive in July 2006 and was instrumental in the establishment of the partnership that launched the Gaelic television channel BBC ALBA. Domhnall chairs the joint management board of BBC ALBA and has spoken at industry events in the UK and internationally. He has also previously been Chair of the Celtic Media Festival.

    Nāʻālehu Anthony
    Director Oiwi TV (Hawaii)

    Nāʻālehu Anthony is a Native Hawaiian from Kaʻaʻawa, O’ahu and is the founder of Palikū Documentary Films - a production company that focuses on documentaries and oral histories with a special emphasis on Hawaiʻi and its people. Anthony has a vast array of experience in the film industry.

    Alethea Arnaquq-Baril
    Filmmaker, Unikkaat Studios Inc (Nunavut)

    Itziar Azpeitia Irurtagoiena
    Head of Special Projects, EITB (Bilbao)

    Itziar Azpeitia Iruretagoiena is Head of Special Projects at Euskal Telebista, the Public Television Company of the Basque Country. She has worked in ETB for more than 30 years across most diverse creative and executive roles. At present she is involved in various projects that ETB is developing in cooperation with the university and the Basque audio-visual sector.

    Ingá-Máret Gaup-Juuso
    Singer (Norway)

    Ingá-Máret Gaup-Juuso is a highly respected, Sámi yoik singer from Finland, As well as solo performances, Inga Maret has performed with a range of top Scandinavian artists and has a number of TV performances to her credit, including on the soundtrack of a recent documentary screened on BBC Alba, about the Sami and their music. The Power of Yoik was also recently screened at the Krakow Film Festival.
